The story of Purushottama Ekadashi

In Treta Yuga there was a powerful king Kritavirya. The king had many queens, but still had no children. Desiring to have a child, the king along with his queens performed severe penance. But he did not see the fruits of his repentance. In such a situation, the queens asked Mata Anusuya for redress. Then his mother along with the king asked him to fast on Ekadashi Shukla Paksha in the month of Mal.

The queens observed the Padmini Ekadashi fast as per the rules prescribed by Goddess Anusuya. At the end of the fast, the Lord appeared and asked to ask for a boon. He begged God for this boon to give us such a son who is full of all qualities, who is respected in all the three worlds and whom no one can beat except you. God gave him such a boon. And after some time the queen gave birth to a son who became known as Kritavirya Arjuna. In the course of time, this child became a very powerful king who also imprisoned Ravana.

Importance of Padmini Ekadashi 2023

Ekadashi fast will be observe in Purushottam month at Shri Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple. The Temple priest say that Ekadashi’s fast worship will be held on Sunday. He said that the Ekadashi fast has special significance in the month of Purushottam.   • On the tenth day, the Dashami Tithi before the Padmini Ekadashi fast, a devotee should have a wholesome ‘sattvik’ food once and it should not be onions and garlic. Avoid eating utensils made of bronze.
  • Try to stay awake on the night of Padmini Ekadashi and try to sleep on the floor if you have some important work the next day and need to sleep.
  • After Padmini Ekadashi, if possible perform Panchamrit Abhishek of Lord Vishnu by lighting tulsi leaves, incense sticks, candles and dhoopa.
  • Worshipers of Lord Vishnu can sing Vishnu hymns or listen to Vishnu songs in the evening. Try reading Vishnu Sahasranama and also try reading other books that you enjoy like Upanishads and Vishnu Purana. You can also chant his name if you have nothing else available.   • On Padmini Ekadashi day you can give food, clothes and other things to someone who is very needy in society or who is lower than you.

  • On Ekadashi fast, wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath and wear clean clothes.
