Maghi Purnima Vrat Katha
According to legend, a Brahmin known as Dhaneshwar lived in Kantika Nagar. He used to beg for Dakshina and gifts for sustenance. Despite utter poverty, both spouses were happy in their own little world. The only thing that made the Brahmin and his wife unhappy was that they had no children. One day his wife went to the town to beg for alms. But everyone refused to give her alms because she had no children.
Which broke her heart and made her very sad and gloomy. Seeing her grief and anguish, someone told her to worship Maa Kali for 16 days. A Brahmin couple worshiped Maa Kali continuously for 16 days. Seeing their penance and strict devotion, Goddess Kali bless them and gave a boon to the Brahmin’s wife to conceive, and she conceive. But he told the brahmin’s wife that according to her ability, she should light a lamp every full moon day. And she should add one lamp every full moon day.
In this way, she should keep increasing the number of lamps every full moon day until there are at least 32 lamps. A Brahmin brought a raw mango from a tree for his wife to worship. His wife was performing puja as a result of which she became pregnant. At every full moon, she lit a lamp as instructed by Mother Kali. By the grace of mother Kali, a son was born to her, who was name Devdas. When Devdas grew up, he was send to Kashi to study in his maternal uncle’s house. In Kashi, there is a mother-nephew accident due to which Devdas gets married fraudulently.
Devdas didn’t want to get married so he was ask to stop this marriage as he was young but still he was forced to get married. After some time, Yamraj came to take his life in the form of Kaal, but on that day the Brahmin couple observed the Purnima fast, so Kaal could not harm Devdas. Since then, fasting on the day of Maghi Purnima is say to lead to freedom from all troubles and fulfill all wishes.
Magha Purnima 2023 Vrat Puja, Vidhi and Rituals
Bathing, charity, homa (havan), fasting and chanting are perform on Magha Purnima. On this day Lord Vishnu should be worship, Shradh-tarpan and donate to poor people.
The method of worshiping Magha Purnima 2023 Vrat is as follows:
- On the day of Maghi Purnima, one should take a bath in a holy river, tank, well or staircase before the morning sunrise. After bathing, offer arghya to the Sun God while reciting the Surya Mantra.
- After bathing, one should worship Lord Madhusudan/Lord Krishna by taking the vow of fasting. During the midday period, poor people and brahmins should receive food and gifts and Dakshina.
- Sesame and black sesame should be give to charity. In the month of Magha, havan should be done with black sesame seeds and ancestors should be offer with black sesame seeds.
- Gayatri Mantra or “Om Namo Narayan” should be chant 108 times continuously.
- Overcome all difficulties of life by performing personalized Vishnu Puja.
