Indira Ekadashi – Significance and Rituals
Indira Ekadashi is one of the most important and religious Hindu festivals to worship Lord Vishnu. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada or Ashwin month. According to the English calendar, this festival is celebrated in the month of September or October.
If Ekadashi falls in Pitru Paksha then it is also called Ekadashi Shradh as this Paksha is dedicated to worship and offer prayers to ancestors. The primary purpose behind Indira Ekadashi fasting and worshiping Lord Vishnu is to seek forgiveness of all past sins. This festival also holds great significance as it helps in giving salvation to the dead ancestors.
Rituals of Indira Ekadashi
On the eve of Indira Ekadashi, devotees usually observe Indira Ekadashi Vrat. The fast is observed for a period of 24 hours which is from Ekadashi to the sunrise of Dwadashi Tithi.
As a form of fasting, devotees consume food once but this too should be before sunrise. Devotees end the fast after offering food to Brahmins and offering prayers to Lord Vishnu.
Observers (devotees) can consume milk products and fruits during the fast.
On the eve of Indira Ekadashi, observers should recite mantras and sing hymns to please Lord Vishnu.
Reciting ‘Vishnu Sahasranama’ is considered very auspicious on this day.

Legend Story
According to legends, there was a great, kind, and powerful king named Indrasen. He took good care of his subjects. Thus, he gained much recognition as an honest king and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once, Narada Muni went to Indrasen’s kingdom and told the king about the pitiable situation after his father’s death.
Narada Muni told Indrasen that his father resides in the kingdom of Yamraj where he is suffering because of his past sins. Narada Muni conveyed a message from his father that Indrasen should fast on Indira Ekadashi as well as make donations to Brahmins so that he can free his father from his past sins and help him attain salvation.
Narada Muni helped the king understand the rituals of fasting and how to do it. King Indrasen performed the Indira Ekadashi fast as explained by Narada Muni and ended it the next day. At that very moment, the king saw his father moving towards the abode of Lord Vishnu, and flowers were showered on him. Not only did the king’s father attain salvation but King Indrasena gained many merits from fasting on Indira Ekadashi as he continued his reign without any hindrance. Since that time period, individuals and devotees observe the Indira Ekadashi fast with great joy, devotion, and enthusiasm.
